Stop Typing, Start Testing: Fast Data Entry in Dataverse with LevelUp

During my daily routine, I have to repeat data entry steps to troubleshoot bugs and/or test written code – Create Contact, Create a Child Case, Save, check the result. I believe all developers are going in rounds with this repetitive and annoying routine. Back in time, I created ribbon buttons that were visible only to Sys Admins, which automated the pieces of this routine – generate/receive random data from an external API,  populate fields. It was working fine, but it required including those scripts in the shipped package or keeping it in an isolated solution, which brought some inconvenience. Whenever amazing Nartraj introduced a new version of LevelUp that included customizable commands, I saw a window of opportunity.

In my example, I created a command that uses https://randomuser.me/ to generate random contact information and populated contact form fields (but obviously you are not limited with this api – you can find other APIs and use it in your code).

Here is the code:

Once you have completed the code, just open LevelUp (double-check that you have the latest version), in the Commands section, click the Plus icon, paste the code into “JavaScript Code Editor”, provide the “Name” and “Emoji” for the button, and click “Create Command”. That is it. Let’s see it in action:
